Yes, this is a thing. A very tasty thing. I got introduced to this dish decades ago and I love converting people’s opinion of this wonderful veggie.
This a very simple set up. All you need is the deep fryer, a couple of closable bags, and:
1.5 cups of all purpose flower
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp salt
1 tbs paprika
1 egg
1 head of cauliflower cut down to bite-sized flowerets
Put all of your dry ingredients into one bag and mix/shake to mix in the spices evenly.
Put the cauliflower in the other bag and toss in the yolk and whites (break the egg into a cup or bowl first to avoid getting any shell in the flour mix). Shake the bag about until the flowerets are coated with egg. Once coated, dump the cauliflower into the dry mix bag and shake about until well coated in flower mix.
Deep fry the coated flowerets until they are a golden brown. Set them on paper towel or two to absorb any excess oil. They are great served with a dip. The favorites are Italian salad dressing, creamy Italian, ranch, or a cheese sauce. Give them a try and enjoy. Next time you make them, experiment with other spices for new flavor combinations.
